Lawyers are not usually appointed in divorces or other family law cases. Texas courts typically only do this in criminal cases. However, there is a situation in which lawyers are appointed in family law matters. If a party to the divorce or other family law matter cannot be found, the court may appoint an attorney to represent their interests. This attorney is called an attorney ad litem and they would represent the missing person’s interests.
